• Playing Perfectly: A Play Therapist's Guide for Working with OCD

Lisa Dion is an international teacher, creator of Synergetic Play Therapy, founder and President of the Synergetic Play Therapy Institute, co-founder of the Synergetic Education Institute, creator of the Business of Therapy and host of the Lessons from the Playroom podcast. She is the author of Aggression in Play Therapy: A Neurobiological Approach for Integrating Intensity and is the 2015 recipient of the Association for Play Therapy’s Professional Education and Training Award of Excellence. 

Keynote Overview:

From perfectionism to anxiety to self doubt, the world of a child struggling with OCD can be incredibly overwhelming. Come explore how to support these children in play therapy and discover how their need for perfection is, in fact, perfect.

Learning Objectives:

Identify at least 3 OCD themes to better understand symptoms in a Play Therapy process Discuss the importance of Play Therapist’s role as an external regulator in treating OCD Explore Synergetic Play Therapy’s concept of “The Set Up/The Offering” with OCD Explore how Play Therapy can help a child with OCD learn how to regulate through their anxiety Name at least 3 ideas to help treat OCD in a Play Therapy process Discuss the importance of working with the entire family system in Play Therapy for a child struggling with OCD.

[S1] Increase Efficacy with Play Therapy Clients by Supporting School Success, Level: Beg./Int., Judith Norman, MA, LPC, LSC, RPT-S When progress in play therapy isn’t translating to behavioral changes at school, it can be frustrating. Help educators understand the context in which behavior takes place and the small shifts they can make to support success in school environments.

[S2] Playing is Growing: Utilizing Sand and Art in Supervision to Support Work with Caregivers, Level: Adv., Kelly Miller LCSW, RPT-S, RYT-200+ Helping supervisees in play therapy with child clients is important, yet most supervisees identify their biggest challenge is working with caregivers. In this workshop, supervisors will engage in sand and art to support supervisee’s in their struggles with caregivers.

[S3] Puppets: The Power Tools for Communication in Play Therapy. Level: Beg./Int., Jane Johnson, LCSW, RPT-S Puppets are powerful, multi-purpose tools for helping clients communicate and express themselves in play therapy. In this playful workshop you will practice your puppetry skills, make simple puppets and make a plan for growing your puppet family. We will sample puppet activities, stories and techniques from different play therapy theories. Join the Brain Gang and Polyvagal Puppets in showing kids how to calm their nervous system and use their brains wisely. 

[S4] Reality Play Therapy, Level: Int., Diane Stutey, PhD, LPC, RPT-S, NCC In this session, we will review and practice Reality Play Therapy (RePT) techniques that can be utilized with individuals or small groups. RePT activities incorporate sand, art, puppets, and other creative ways to help youth critically examine what they want, what they are doing, and plan and evaluate their choices.

6 Hours CEU

[S5] Play Therapy with Children of Domestic Violence, Level: Int./Adv., Jeri Yingling, LPC, RPT-S, ACS & Linda Klein LPC, RPT-S Recent research demonstrated that trauma symptoms were found in 92% of children exposed to domestic violence whose symptoms last longer than one month. This workshop will exam the impact of Domestic Violence on children and families and how Play Therapy is key in effective treatment. The Play Therapist must adapt to the specific themes and trauma responses in Play Therapy expressed by the child who has experience Domestic Violence to provide optimum treatment.
